Introduction:
On this site you can find informations of my selfmade tesla coils.
How do Tesla Coils work? First, you have to know, that there are different kinds of Tesla Coils: Spark Gap Tesla Coil (SGTC), Solid State Tesla Coil (SSTC), Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla Coil (DRSSTC), Vacuum Tube Tesla Coil (VTTC), etc. Since I only built Spark Gap Tesla Coils, you can only find informations about Spark Gap Tesla Coils on this site.
How do they work. It is not easy to explain, because it is a bit complicated. A SGTC has a few components:
The Highvoltage Transformer charges up the capacitor.
If the voltage is high enough, the spark gap will fire.
So, Capacitor and Primary Coil are connected, which build up a resonant circuit. The resonant circuit should oscillate with (nearly) the same frequency like the secondary resonance frequency and creates a strong magnetic field. Now, during a cycle (While the current flows into the coil and back to the capacitor and again into the coil, etc. Until the energie in the capacitor is too low.), some of the energie is absorbed by the secondary coil. [...] I am sorry for this shitty simple theory. (Which may eventually be wrong) If you want a better one, I can give you an advice: link. Or google for Tesla Coil Theories. |
